A week of chef hats, colourful bowls and no-fire recipes, as our youngest students learn what a balanced plate really looks like.
Nutrition Week returns to OLIS with a full seven days of tasting, sorting, plating and - most importantly - talking about food.
Each class takes a turn in the activity room, where children put on their paper chef hats and build their own plates from bowls of fruit, sprouts, nuts and vegetables. There is no fire and no sharp equipment: everything is arranged, layered and decorated by hand, which is exactly what makes it possible for even our Pre-KG children to take part.
Along the way the teachers slip in the lesson. Why does the plate need more than one colour? What does milk do that juice cannot? Which of these grew under the ground? By Friday most children can name a food group without being prompted.
Parents are welcome to send in a favourite family recipe card during the week. The best of them go up on the corridor display outside the activity room.
